Head of Business Risk & Control Management

The Head of Business Risk & Control Management will be part of the new three person Business Risk & Control Management (BRCM) team, which will support the business with its management of the risk and control environment.

Background

The Head of Business Risk & Control Management will be part of the new three person Business Risk & Control Management (BRCM) team, which will support the business with its management of the risk and control environment.

Key elements of the role include supporting the business in documenting the risk and control (‘R&C’) environment, maintaining the R&C register, ensuring controls are evidenced, preparing R&C MI and reporting which supports and evidences Management decision making, and will manage the RCSA process. The successful candidate will have strong R&C management and/or oversight experience, and will interact with Senior Managers extensively.

This is the senior manager role within the BRCM team, responsible for managing two BRCM’s, prioritising and directing the work of the team.

Risk and control management

  • Work with all Business areas to ensure risks and controls are well understood, registered, and documented
  • Maintain the R&C register
  • Work with Business areas to ensure control operation is reliably evidenced
  • Support the Managers in their assessment of risk management and control effectiveness
  • Manage the RCSA process for each business area, ensuring a high standard of R&C review and control effectiveness assessment

Risk and control management information (MI) and reporting

  • Produce MI and reporting on behalf of each business area, which sets out key risks and controls, KRI’s, the effectiveness of the control environment, and draws out issues, and provides high quality narrative and commentary.

Issue and action management

  • Maintain the log of material R&C issues (e.g. Audit identified issues, etc)
  • Ensure that all issues have actions which are properly owned
  • Follow-up with action and issue owners to ensure timely closure
  • Report issue and action status and progress

Support the quarterly Business Control Forums

  • [BCF’s are held for each ExCo member, and Managers of larger business areas. It is a meeting between the Business Head and their direct reports, with the purpose of reviewing and directing the R&C environment]
  • Act as secretary to the BCF, including preparation of meeting papers, supporting MI and reports, and gathering commentary and other inputs
  • Ensure decisions, issues and actions are logged and followed-up

Provide general R&C support, expertise, advice and training

  • Act as an integral support to business area heads as they manage, and continuously enhance, the R&C environment
  • Assist business area heads as they work with oversight and assurance teams in the planning and conduct of reviews (e.g. audits)
  • Coordinate the AAF audit and assist in-scope teams in their preparation
  • Maintain the Group wind down plan
  • Promote R&C awareness and culture across the business

BRCM team management

  • Manage and lead the BRCM team
  • Plan, prioritise and direct the effort of the team
  • Work closely with senior managers across the Group to ensure that this First Line R&C team continuously adds value and is seen as an essential contributor and support to senior managers.

 

The Ideal Candidate

  • Experience in auditing, Risk Management, First Line control management, or in an oversight function/role within Financial Services is essential.
  • Very strong analytical and problem solving skills, and an ability to critically evaluate information and issues.
  • Excellent communication and influencing skills, with an ability to engage stakeholders at all levels and across disciplines.
  • Excellent written communication skills, including report and presentation writing suitable for audiences up to and including the Board.
  • Very strong Power Point, Excel, and Word capability, and extensive experience in using risk and control systems, is required.
  • Demonstrated ability to multi-task, to work independently or collaboratively with other teams.
  • Ability to prioritise work and to meet tight deadlines.
